Saint Lucia of the quails

Saint Lucia quail is one of the deepest traditions of Syracuse. The festival traditionally takes place every year on the first Sunday of maggio.L ' event commemorates a miracle that took place during the terrible famine that struck Syracuse in 1646. The people , exhausted from lack of food, gathered in prayer around Saint Lucia , its patron saint . Miraculously , after the prayers came a fleet of ships, loaded with grain , which was announced by the flight of a flock of quail.
The festival is held during the morning . Around noon , the silver statue of Saint Lucia , kept in the Cathedral, is brought to the square by the holders , the Green Berets , and a brief procession , surrounded by the crowd, to the church of Saint Lucia to the Abbey , at the south of the square. In passing next to the Archbishopric , even today, are released doves in flight to remind the miracolo.Negli recent years the festival has been further enriched by historical re-enactments in costume. Today, Saint Lucia quail , begins at 9 am with a long procession of figures in baroque costumes , costumes by sailors and craftsmen of the time, horsemen and carriages, including the beautiful and ancient carriage of the Senate.
